The Montessori People nursery has been awarded a Sun Safe Nurseries’ Accreditation for 2026.
We’re delighted to have been awarded our Sun Safe Nurseries’ accreditation for 2026. Developed by national skin cancer charity, this annual accreditation scheme helps nurseries implement a successful Sun Safety Policy and educate children about the dangers of skin cancer.
Why is the Sun Safe Accreditation important?
Children spend almost half their childhood at pre and primary school, much of it outdoors. During the warmer months, this means they are exposed to ultraviolet radiation from the sun, particularly between 11am and 3pm. Without adequate protection, a child’s delicate skin can easily burn, causing damage that can increase their risk of developing skin cancer in later life.
The good news is that skin cancer is almost entirely preventable, and with parental support, simple steps – such as providing suitable clothing, sun hats and sunscreen – can be undertaken to ensure that your child is protected and can enjoy the sun safely while they are in our care.
Sun safe items we need from you
From April to the end of September, please ensure your child has the following items which can be
kept at nursery:
- A t-shirt to ensure shoulders are covered.
- A sun hat labelled with your child’s name, preferably a broad-brimmed (bucket style) or legionnaire hat to shade the face, neck, ears and cheeks.
We already provide SPF 50 sunscreen for all children, apart from those with allergies. If your child suffers from allergies, please provide your own quality sunscreen labelled with your child’s name. This should be a minimum SPF 50, be broad-spectrum to provide both UVA and UVB protection, and if labelled with a UVA star rating, carry a minimum of 4 stars.
Sun safe education for your children
We’ll be teaching the children about sun safety through a range of fun and educational activities at nursery during the summer. This will include reading books and singing songs to help them understand the potential dangers of skin cancer. We’d really appreciate your support to reinforce these messages at home.
